Is Lefkada Worth Visiting?

Lefkada is the only Greek island connected to the mainland by a drivable causeway and swing bridge, and that access alone has made its cliff beaches some of the most visited in the Ionian without a single ferry crossing required.

Lefkada's west coast holds Porto Katsiki, a stretch of white pebble beneath sheer limestone cliffs reached by roughly 100 steps carved into the rock, and Egremni, wider and wilder, rebuilt with a 350-step metal staircase after the 2015 earthquake destroyed the original path. Both beaches turn the water a shade of turquoise that shifts through the day depending on the light, and arriving before mid-morning matters for parking and crowds at either one.

Vasiliki, a fishing village turned windsurfing destination at the island's southern tip, sits within easy reach of both beaches and gives travelers a livelier base with tavernas and shops, while the mountain village of Athani offers a quieter, more traditional stay a short drive from Porto Katsiki. Cape Lefkatas, the island's southernmost point, holds a historic lighthouse and some of the best sunset views on the island.

Lefkada Town, the capital, sits on a sandy spit between a lagoon and the strait, with a medieval castle visible right at the causeway's edge, and just outside Nidri harbor a small grave marks the resting place of a German archaeologist who spent a decade convinced he had found the true site of Homer's Ithaca. Mount Elati, the island's highest point at 1,158 meters, gives hikers panoramic views over the coastline and neighboring Kefalonia.

The nearest airport, Aktion National, sits about 20 kilometers away near Preveza, and the drive from Athens takes roughly four and a half to five hours along the western coast. Lefkada suits beach travelers, windsurfers, and road trippers who want dramatic Ionian coastline without a ferry schedule, and four days cover the essentials, with a full week giving the island's slower villages room to unfold.
