Is Lesvos Worth Visiting?

Lesvos gave Greece two of its most influential ancient poets, Sappho and Alcaeus, and the island still carries that literary weight alongside a petrified forest that predates human history by roughly 20 million years.

Lesvos, Greece's third largest island, sits in the northeastern Aegean, its landscape split between two deep bays and covered largely in olive groves that have shaped the island's economy for centuries. Mytilene, the capital, holds one of the strongest castles in the eastern Mediterranean, originally Byzantine and later rebuilt by the Genoese and Ottomans, along with an archaeological museum, a Byzantine museum, and neoclassical streets with an Anatolian influence from the island's proximity to Turkey.

Molyvos, on the island's north coast, ranks among Greece's best preserved medieval towns, its 13th century Genoese castle overlooking stone houses and wooden balconies largely unchanged for centuries, and the settlement has been protected since 1965 to preserve that character. Plomari, in the south, built its identity on ouzo production and holds a museum dedicated to the anise spirit, while mountain villages like Agiassos keep traditional crafts and architecture at a slower pace than the coast.

The Petrified Forest near Sigri, a UNESCO Global Geopark protecting fossilized trees roughly 20 million years old, formed when volcanic ash buried an entire forest in place, and the Natural History Museum there explains the geology behind it. The wetlands around Kalloni draw more than 250 recorded bird species, ranking among Europe's most important birdwatching sites, and thermal springs at Eftalou, Polichnitos, and Gera give the island natural hot baths dating back to Roman use.

Lesvos has its own airport with flights from Athens and Thessaloniki, and ferries connect to Piraeus, Kavala, and neighboring Chios. It suits travelers drawn to literature, geology, and villages that have kept their own character over resort development, and its size, third largest in Greece, gives it enough range to fill well over a week.
