Is Lipsi Good for Families?

Lipsi keeps its main beaches shallow enough to sit in like a pool, and the island's small scale gives families a real, low-key kind of trip. Yes, it works well for families.

Lipsi's Platis Gialos, the island's most popular beach, sits in a bay where the water stays shallow well out from shore, making it the clear pick for young kids, with a taverna on the hill above for lunch. The town beach, Lientou, sits just five minutes from the harbor promenade and stays similarly shallow and shaded by tamarisk trees, with changing rooms and a Seatrac for accessibility. Kampos, on the quieter side, adds soft sand and natural shade without the same crowds, and Hoxlakoura, one of the island's largest beaches, pairs white pebbles with clear water that draws both adults and kids.

Back in the main square, a small playground gives younger kids somewhere to run, and a set of giant chess pieces sits there too, though most visitors seem to skip them. Lipsi's cats, wandering freely across beaches, the harbor, and even into restaurants, tend to become their own kind of attraction, and kids often end up keeping a running count by the end of the stay.

For a slower day out, renting a pedal boat lets families explore the small islets just offshore, and ancient walls from a Byzantine settlement sit tucked into the vegetation near one of the beaches for anyone curious about the island's older history.

Lipsi limits every hotel to 60 beds or fewer, which keeps the island from feeling overrun even in peak August, and its beaches stay largely unorganized, without rows of sunbeds, so bringing your own shade for the quieter spots matters.

Lipsi has no airport, and most travelers connect through Patmos or Leros by ferry. It suits families wanting shallow water, short distances, and a relaxed pace over built-in entertainment.
