Is Lipsi Worth Visiting?
Lipsi sits between Patmos and Leros in the Dodecanese, small enough that most of its beaches and villages fall within a 30 to 45 minute walk of the port, and that scale defines everything about a visit here.
Lipsi holds around 800 year-round residents, and nearly everyone stays close to Chora, the island's only real town, where the Church of Agios Ioannis Theologos, capped with a wide blue dome, anchors the view over the harbor. The old quarter above it, known as Horio, keeps a slower, more traditional feel, with whitewashed houses and paved paths climbing up from the port.
A real spread of unorganized beaches sits within walking distance or a short drive of Chora. Platis Gialos ranks among the more striking beaches in the Dodecanese, its shallow water shaded by tamarisk trees and well suited to families, while Kambos offers sandy, calm swimming closer to town, and Katsadia's pebble shoreline and clear water make it a strong spot for snorkeling. A local taxi and a summer bus service both run out to the main beaches for anyone who'd rather skip the walk.
The family-run Lipsi Winery produces its own red and white wines and offers tastings among the vines just outside town. In Vroulia Bay, a marine rescue center run by the Archipelagos Institute nurses injured dolphins, seals, and sea turtles back to health, one of the only facilities of its kind in Greece, operating entirely on solar power. Boat tours depart the harbor regularly for swimming stops at the smaller islets scattered around Lipsi.
Lipsi has no airport, so travelers either fly to Leros and connect by a short ferry, or take a direct ferry from Piraeus that runs closer to eight or nine hours. It suits anyone wanting real quiet, walkable beaches, and simple island life, and it pairs naturally with time on Patmos or Leros given how close the three islands sit together.
