Is Mykonos Expensive?
Mykonos carries a real reputation for being one of the priciest islands in Greece, and that reputation is largely earned, though the gap between a budget-conscious visit and a full luxury one here is wider than on almost any other island.
Mykonos drives much of its cost through beach club culture, where sunbeds at famous spots can run considerably more than a night's accommodation elsewhere in Greece, and cocktails at those same venues carry a real premium. Skipping the beach clubs entirely and heading to unorganized stretches like Agios Sostis or Panormos instead gives the same turquoise water without any rental fee attached.
Public buses connect Chora to the island's main beaches affordably, and relying on them rather than taxis, which run notably higher here than on the mainland, makes a real difference over the course of a stay. The SeaBus between the old and new ports offers a similarly low-cost alternative to private transfers for anyone arriving by ferry.
Dining follows the same pattern as everything else on the island: back-street tavernas in Chora serve genuine Greek food at reasonable prices, while the beachfront and harbor-view restaurants charge considerably more for the same style of meal. Buying water and alcohol from supermarkets rather than bars or beach clubs also keeps costs down noticeably.
Accommodation prices swing dramatically between shoulder season and the peak weeks of July and August, and visiting outside that window brings costs down substantially while keeping the island's beaches and nightlife just as accessible.
Mykonos suits travelers willing to plan carefully around where they eat, drink, and swim, connecting easily to Naxos or Paros for anyone wanting a more moderately priced island nearby, and Mykonos's cost of living runs high overall but stays manageable for travelers who plan around where they eat, drink, and sleep.
