Is Mykonos Worth Visiting?

Mykonos built its reputation on nightlife and beach clubs, but the island's whitewashed lanes, working windmills, and a short boat ride to one of Greece's most significant archaeological sites give it real depth beyond the party scene.

Mykonos centers on Chora, a maze of narrow lanes built specifically to confuse pirates centuries ago, where the balconied houses of Little Venice hang directly over the water. Five whitewashed chapels merge into a single structure at Panagia Paraportiani, one of the most recognized churches in Greece, and nearby, the row of windmills at Kato Mili, some dating to the 16th century, once ground grain for ships passing through the harbor.

A half hour boat ride from the old port crosses to Delos, an uninhabited island and UNESCO World Heritage Site considered the mythical birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. Ruins spanning more than 3,000 years cover the site, including the Terrace of the Lions, a row of marble statues placed to guard the sanctuary, and the trip works well as a half day addition to a Mykonos stay.

The island's beaches range widely in character. Platis Gialos and Ornos stay calm and family friendly, Psarou draws a quieter upscale crowd, and Paradise and Super Paradise turn into full day party scenes by afternoon. The Aegean Maritime Museum, housed in a 19th century building in Chora, traces the island's nautical history for anyone wanting a break from the beach.

Mykonos suits travelers who want beach clubs and nightlife, real Cycladic architecture, and an easy day trip to Delos all in one place, reachable by direct flight or a ferry from Athens taking three and a half to five hours.
