Is Paxos Worth Visiting?

Paxos holds more olive trees than residents by a factor of roughly one hundred, a quarter million trees planted under Venetian rule that still shape both the landscape and the island's economy today.

Paxos sits just south of Corfu, small enough to cross end to end in about 30 minutes by scooter, and its three main villages each carry their own character. Gaios, the capital, sits in a fjord-like cove protected by the islets of Panagia and Agios Nikolaos, the latter holding the ruins of a Venetian castle built in 1423, and its harbor stays lined with fishing boats and yachts beneath colorful buildings with Venetian and Italian influences.

Lakka, on the northern tip, wraps around a horseshoe harbor known among sailors and holds an old Byzantine church dating to 1600 alongside artisan shops selling hand-painted ceramics, and Loggos, smaller still, keeps a crescent-shaped waterfront lined with tavernas serving traditional Greek meze. The Olive Press Museum near Magazia occupies an 18th century stone press and traces the tradition that still defines much of the island's income, and dishes like sofrito, pastitsada, and bourdeto reflect the same Venetian-influenced cuisine found across the Ionian.

The island's west coast holds sea caves, arches, and towering white cliffs best explored by boat, including the well known Blue Caves, and the Tripitos Arch, a natural rock formation on the western shore, draws visitors for its sunset views. A short boat ride south reaches Antipaxos, known for beaches with some of the clearest water in Greece, and day trips there rank among the most popular experiences based out of Gaios.

Paxos has no airport, so travelers reach it by ferry or hydrofoil from Corfu, a crossing of about an hour, or from Igoumenitsa on the mainland. It suits travelers who want a quiet, walkable island built around olive groves, good food, and water instead of nightlife, and while a day trip from Corfu is possible, staying at least a few nights lets the island's slower rhythm actually settle in.
