Is Porto Heli Worth Visiting?
A deep natural harbor lined with yachts and fishing boats, beaches suited to families and couples alike, and some of the Peloponnese's best ancient sites within an hour's drive all make Porto Heli worth the visit.
Porto Heli sits on the site of ancient Halieis, a fishing settlement founded in the 7th century BC whose acropolis ruins still sit on the hill above the modern harbor. The town stayed a quiet fishing village until the 1970s, when Athenians began building summer homes along the bay, and its deep natural harbor now shelters yachts alongside working fishing boats, giving the waterfront a cosmopolitan feel without losing the working port underneath it.
The beaches here vary by mood. Hinitsa and Ververonda draw a more polished crowd with clear, calm water and beachfront service, while the Costa area suits families with its shallow, gentle shoreline. Smaller coves scattered along the coastline are reachable mostly by boat, and they're worth the extra effort for anyone wanting a quieter swim away from the main bays.
A ten minute boat ride crosses to Spetses, a car-free island known for horse-drawn carriages and preserved 19th century mansions. The Didyma Caves, two sinkholes with chapels carved into the rock, sit about 20 kilometers inland, and both the ancient theater at Epidaurus and the citadel at Mycenae are roughly an hour away by car. Nafplio, Greece's first capital after independence, makes a strong day trip further along the coast for anyone wanting Venetian architecture and a proper old town.
Porto Heli suits travelers who want an upscale coastal base with real history close by, from ancient ruins to Saronic islands a short boat ride away. It works well for couples, families, and anyone road tripping the eastern Peloponnese who wants comfort alongside the sightseeing.
