Is Psara Worth Visiting?

Psara once fielded one of the largest naval fleets in Greece and lost nearly its entire population in a single act of resistance during the Greek War of Independence, a history the island still carries in almost every corner of its one settlement.

Psara sits west of Chios, the largest island in a small cluster that includes the uninhabited islets of Antipsara and Kato Nisi. In June 1824, Ottoman forces destroyed the island in retaliation for its role in the revolution, and out of roughly 30,000 residents at the time, only a few thousand escaped by boat. The poet Dionysios Solomos later wrote a poem mourning the loss, and the island still holds an annual commemoration each June.

Mavri Rachi, the black ridge where the last defenders made their stand, holds a monument to the fallen, and the house of Konstantinos Kanaris, the naval captain born on Psara who became one of the revolution's most celebrated commanders, now operates as a small museum. The Church of Agios Nikolaos, completed in 1793 atop the village's highest point, gives a wide view over the harbor after a climb of about sixty steps, and the 16th century Monastery of the Dormition, still home to a small community of nuns, holds a library of old manuscripts.

About forty beaches ring the island, all unorganized and reached mostly by dirt road or on foot, including Lazareta and Katsouni near the village and the more remote Lakka and Lemnos further out. A short boat trip from the harbor reaches Antipsara, home to Psili Ammos, regarded as one of the finest beaches in the Mediterranean. The rocky, largely uncultivated terrain leaves fishing as the island's main livelihood, and the peak of Profitis Ilias gives hikers wide views back over the whole island.

Psara connects to Chios by a short ferry crossing of about 20 minutes, with longer direct sailings also running from Piraeus. It suits travelers drawn to real history, quiet beaches, and a village that has stayed largely unchanged, and accommodation stays limited enough that a visit here calls for planning ahead rather than showing up on a whim.
