Is Pserimos Worth Visiting?
Pserimos holds close to 6,700 olive trees on an island barely fifteen square kilometers wide, nearly all of them entrusted to the roughly 30 residents who call the place home year-round.
Pserimos sits between Kos and Kalymnos, and its only settlement, Avlakia, wraps around the harbor with whitewashed houses, a handful of tavernas, and the Church of the Virgin Mary near the port. No roads cross the island beyond a short stretch near the beach, so most of Pserimos opens up only on foot or by boat.
Hiking trails cross the barren, herb-scented interior past old cisterns and abandoned fields, and the waters off the island's east side hold the wreck of the Thor Star, a cargo ship, alongside the remains of German vessels sunk during the Second World War, drawing divers from Kos and Kalymnos. A short boat ride reaches the islet of Plati, known for some of the clearest water in the Dodecanese and a second, smaller shipwreck of its own.
Avlakia beach, right at the port, stays the busiest, but Vathy, Marathonda, and Grafiotissa sit further out and unorganized, reachable mainly by trail or boat and worth the extra effort for real quiet. Day-trip boats from Kos and Kalymnos crowd the harbor by mid-morning in summer and clear out again by late afternoon, so arriving early or staying overnight, limited as accommodation is, gives a different sense of the island entirely.
Pserimos has no direct ferry from mainland Greece, so travelers connect through Kos or Kalymnos, with the crossing running well under an hour either way. It suits travelers who want a real, small, slow island built around olive groves, capers, and quiet coves rather than sights, and even a few hours here before or after the crowds leaves a lasting impression.
