Is Salamis Worth Visiting?

Salamis holds the site of one of history's most consequential naval battles, where a heavily outnumbered Greek fleet destroyed the Persian navy in 480 BC and changed the course of Western civilization in a single afternoon.

Salamis, the largest island in the Saronic Gulf, sits just two kilometers from Piraeus, reachable by a ten minute ferry crossing from the suburb of Perama. That short strait is the same water where Themistocles lured Xerxes's fleet into a confined space, and while no marker sits directly on the site, the crossing itself carries the weight of the history that unfolded there. The Archaeological Museum of Salamis, housed in a former school building, traces the island's story from the Neolithic period through the battle and beyond.

The island is also the mythical birthplace of the hero Ajax and the adopted home of the tragedian Euripides, who is said to have retreated to a ten-chambered cave near the village of Peristeria to write his plays, a claim supported by a 5th century BC drinking cup found there inscribed with part of his name. Salamis functions today as a real, lived-in place rather than a resort, home to around 40,000 residents and Greece's largest naval base, and that working character shows up directly in its food, with a central fish market supplying tavernas across the island with fresh catch.

A pine forest covers much of the island's south, and hiking and cycling trails connect hillside chapels, the Monastery of Faneromeni on the coast, and quieter coves away from the main town. Beaches like Selinia and Kanakia offer real swimming, with Kanakia reachable by a forest trail popular with cyclists, and diving centers operate here year-round for anyone wanting to explore beneath the surface as well.

Salamis connects to Piraeus by a short ferry that runs constantly throughout the day, making it one of the easiest islands in Greece to reach without any advance planning. It suits travelers drawn to real history, working island life, and a slower pace shaped more by residents than visitors, and a couple of days give the museum, the cave, and the coastline enough time to come together.
