Is Samos Worth Visiting?

Samos claims two of antiquity's most consequential minds, Pythagoras and Epicurus, both born on an island still shaped by the same mountains and vineyards they knew.

Samos sits in the eastern Aegean, separated from Turkey by a strait just 1.6 kilometers wide at its narrowest. Pythagorio, built on the site of the ancient capital, holds the Tunnel of Eupalinos, a 4,000 foot aqueduct cut through a mountain in the 6th century BC from both ends simultaneously and still nearly perfectly aligned, an engineering feat rare enough that only one other tunnel in history was built the same way. A short walk away, the Heraion, a sanctuary dedicated to Hera, once held a temple with 155 columns so ambitious it was never finished, and a single surviving column still stands on the site today, largely without the crowds that fill Delphi or Olympia.

Samos produces Muscat wine grown from vineyards that carpet the lower slopes of Mount Ampelos and Mount Kerkis, a tradition running back roughly three thousand years and celebrated each summer at a wine festival in Karlovasi, the island's second largest town. Mountain villages like Manolates and Vourliotes keep stone houses and cobbled lanes largely unchanged, and the Cave of Pythagoras, reached by a steep dirt path on Mount Kerkis, marks where the mathematician is said to have hidden from a tyrant who accused him of corruption.

The island runs more than 240 kilometers of marked hiking trails, the longest network in Greece, connecting villages, waterfalls near Potami, gorges, and remote beaches across terrain that climbs to over 1,400 meters at Mount Kerkis. Psili Ammos and Tsamadou rank among the best known beaches, and boat trips from Pythagorio reach the uninhabited islet of Samiopoula for a quieter swim away from the coast.

Samos has its own airport with flights from Athens in about an hour, and ferries connect to Ikaria, Patmos, Chios, and directly to Kusadasi in Turkey for day trips to Ephesus. It suits travelers drawn to ancient history, wine, and serious hiking in equal measure, and three to five days give the island's mountains, coast, and ruins enough room to unfold.
