Is Santorini Worth Visiting?

Santorini formed when one of history's largest volcanic eruptions collapsed the center of the island roughly 3,600 years ago, leaving behind the caldera that now defines its cliffside villages and famous sunsets.

Santorini's villages, Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani, sit along the caldera rim up to 300 meters above the sea, and the roughly ten kilometer trail connecting Fira and Oia along the cliffs ranks among the more memorable walks in Greece. Oia's blue-domed churches and whitewashed lanes draw the crowds most associated with the island, while Imerovigli offers a similar view with fewer people around it.

Ancient Akrotiri, a Bronze Age town buried under volcanic ash from the same eruption that shaped the caldera, preserved streets, multi-story buildings, and drainage systems well enough to earn comparisons to Pompeii. The covered site pairs naturally with the nearby Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira, which holds many of the frescoes and artifacts recovered from the excavation.

Unlike most Cycladic islands, Santorini's beaches run black, red, and volcanic gray rather than white sand, with Perissa and Kamari offering the most swimmable stretches on the eastern coast, and Red Beach drawing visitors for its color even though the swimming there is secondary to the scenery. The island's volcanic soil produces Assyrtiko, a mineral driven white wine found nowhere else in quite the same form, and wineries across the island run tastings paired with views over the vines.
