Is Serifos Good for Families?

Serifos spreads more than 70 beaches along its coastline, and enough of them stay shallow and shaded that families rarely need to search far for the right spot. Yes, it works well for families, especially those wanting shallow water, short distances, and a slower daily rhythm.

Serifos's Psili Ammos, often ranked among the best beaches in Europe, gives the clearest family pick, with fine, pale sand, shallow water extending more than 30 meters out, and tamarisk trees offering natural shade, along with two tavernas for lunch. Livadakia, close to the port town, adds an organized, easy option with sunbeds and beach bars nearby, and Platis Gialos combines soft golden sand with both an unorganized stretch and a section with sunbeds and umbrellas for families who want either.

Ganema and the island's other southern beaches suit older kids better than toddlers, since the water there deepens more quickly and the walk to reach them runs longer.

For families, staying in or around Livadi makes the most practical base, since Chora, the hilltop capital, involves a steep walk from limited parking that's harder to manage with young kids. Livadi keeps ferries, restaurants, shops, and the closest beaches all within easy reach, and evenings in Chora itself, once you've made the walk up, tend to be slow and social, with local families gathering in the square.

An easy hiking trail leads up to the Castle of Serifos for panoramic views, and the mining ruins near Megalo Livadi give older kids a real historical detail to explore, tied to the island's industrial past. The Archaeological Museum rounds out a quieter afternoon for families wanting a break from the beach.

Serifos suits families wanting calm, shallow beaches, low traffic, and a real, unhurried pace, connecting easily to Sifnos or Milos for anyone extending the trip.
