Is Serres Good for Families?

Serres pairs a real city park built for kids with a wetland safari just outside town, and that combination covers most of what families look for. Yes, it works well for families.

Serres's Agioi Anargyroi Park gives families a spacious, central spot with playgrounds and walking paths, an easy option for younger kids who need room to run between sightseeing stops. The Archaeological Museum, housed in the old Ottoman-era Bezesteni, uses interactive exhibits that make ancient Greek history more approachable for kids than a typical glass-case museum, and the Municipal Library runs storytelling sessions and workshops aimed specifically at children.

The bigger draw sits about 40 kilometers outside the city at Lake Kerkini, a wetland national park formed when a dam flooded the valley in 1932. Boat trips give families a close look at the lake's wildlife, including one of Europe's most significant bird populations and the water buffalo that swim through its shallows, and horseback riding along the shore adds an active option for older kids. Local dairies around the lake sell buffalo milk ice cream and yogurt, which tends to be a highlight in its own right.

Alistrati Cave, a genuine underground exploration with lit walkways, gives families a different kind of outing, and Ano Poroia village and the Valley of Agioi Anargyroi both suit an easy afternoon of walking and picnicking away from the city center.

In winter, the Lailias Ski Center, in the mountains near Serres, offers beginner-friendly slopes and snow play suited to families rather than serious skiers, giving the region a genuine second season for family trips beyond summer.

Serres suits families wanting a manageable city base with real green space, paired with a genuine nature outing at Lake Kerkini that works for nearly every age, from toddlers watching birds from a boat to older kids on horseback along the shore.
