Is Sifnos Worth Visiting?
Sifnos gave Greece its first modern cookbook, written in 1910 by a chef born on the island, and food still drives nearly everything a visit here involves.
Sifnos sits in the western Cyclades between Serifos and Milos, and its pottery tradition runs back roughly 4,000 years, still active today in around 19 workshops concentrated in Kamares, Artemonas, and Platys Gialos. The island's signature dish, revithada, a chickpea stew baked overnight in a sealed clay pot, comes straight out of that tradition, and mastelo, lamb slow-cooked in red wine, shows up on menus across the island alongside caper salad and honey pastries.
Kastro, the medieval former capital, sits perched on a sea cliff with Venetian walls built directly into ancient columns, and its Archaeological Museum occupies a former Catholic church. Apollonia, the current capital, keeps a livelier pace with its pedestrian nightlife lane, and neighboring Artemonas holds neoclassical mansions and some of the island's best pottery studios. Over 100 kilometers of old stone paths, kalderimia, connect these villages and more than 300 chapels scattered across the hillsides, with the route from Apollonia to Kastro passing through olive groves along the way.
Platys Gialos, the island's most developed beach, runs long and golden with shade from a line of trees. Kamares combines a working port with its own beach, and Vathi, reached by a hiking trail through a green valley or by a longer drive, offers a quieter bay backed by the Taxiarchis church. Chrissopigi Monastery, built on a rocky peninsula jutting into the sea, marks the island's protector and remains one of its most striking religious sites.
Sifnos connects to Piraeus by high-speed ferry in around two to two and a half hours, and the nearest airport sits on Milos, a short ferry away. It suits food-focused travelers, hikers, and anyone wanting real Cycladic character without heavy crowds, and most visitors need at least three to five days to cover its villages, trails, and kitchens properly.
