Is Sikinos Worth Visiting?

Sikinos was known in antiquity as Oenoe, named for the vineyards that once covered its slopes, and that wine heritage still runs through the island today at one of the more distinctive wineries in the Cyclades.

Sikinos sits between Folegandros and Ios, and its capital, Chora, splits into two connected settlements: Kastro, a fortified hamlet built on a cliff edge in the 15th century, and Horio, the older village extending south of it with narrow alleys and traditional stone houses. Three windmills mark the highest point of Kastro, and the central square, Pantanassa, holds a church built in 1787 with a gilded wooden icon screen inside.

Episkopi, a short drive from Chora, holds one of the more unusual monuments in the Cyclades, a 3rd century Roman mausoleum later converted first into a temple and then into a Christian church, with layers of classical and Byzantine architecture still visible in the structure. Above Kastro, the Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi, built in 1690 as both a place of worship and a refuge from pirate raids, gives sweeping views over the island at sunset.

Manalis Winery, on the island's northern slopes, produces wine from Assyrtiko and Aidani grapes grown on terraces carved into rocky ground, and its tastings pair naturally with views toward Folegandros in the distance. Alopronia, the island's port, holds Sikinos's main sandy beach along with most of its tavernas and accommodation, while Agios Georgios and Dialiskari offer quieter, pebble-lined alternatives shaded by tamarisk trees.

Sikinos has no airport, so travelers arrive by ferry, most commonly connecting through Ios, Folegandros, or Santorini. It suits travelers drawn to quiet villages, wine, and Byzantine history over crowds or nightlife, and two to three days give Chora, Episkopi, and the island's beaches enough room to settle in.
