Is Symi Expensive?

Symi carries a real reputation as one of the pricier Dodecanese islands, and that reputation holds up along the harbor front in particular, where the neoclassical mansions and yacht-lined waterfront draw a more upscale crowd than most nearby islands see.

Symi charges a real premium for dining and accommodation directly on Gialos harbor, since the setting alone commands higher prices, but heading into the backstreets just behind the waterfront, or up into Chorio, the older upper village, brings both meal and room costs down considerably without losing much in the way of atmosphere.

Getting around costs little if you're willing to walk, since most of Gialos sits within a five minute stroll of anywhere else in town, though reaching Chorio means climbing roughly 500 stone steps rather than paying for transport. Taxis remain limited, with only a handful operating across the entire island, so relying on them for every trip adds up quickly, while the infrequent local buses to the main beaches and Panormitis Monastery cost far less for anyone willing to check the schedule ahead of time.

Symi has no airport, so most travelers connect through Rhodes, a short ferry crossing of about 45 minutes, and flying into Rhodes from Athens rather than attempting the long, roughly full-day ferry directly from Piraeus saves both time and money for most itineraries.

Water taxis to beaches like Agia Marina and Nanou Bay add a real cost worth factoring in, since Symi's closest beach, Nos, sits just a short walk from the harbor, while the better known stretches of coast require a short boat ride to reach.

Symi suits travelers willing to spend a bit more for harbor views and architecture, and choosing accommodation and dining a street or two back from the water brings the overall cost of a stay down meaningfully without sacrificing much of the island's character.
