Is Symi Worth Visiting?

Symi built its wealth on sponge diving and shipbuilding in the 19th century, and the neoclassical mansions that fortune left behind still climb the hillside above one of the more striking harbors in the Aegean.

Symi sits a short ferry ride from Rhodes, and its harbor town, Gialos, wraps around a horseshoe bay lined with pastel mansions built from that sponge and spice trade wealth. A steep stone stairway, the Kali Strata, climbs from the harbor to Chorio, the older upper town, where 18th century mansions and narrow lanes give a quieter look at the island once the day's ferry crowds thin out.

The Archaeological and Folklore Museum in Chorio occupies several neoclassical mansions and traces the island's past across three floors, and the Monastery of Panormitis, a major pilgrimage site dedicated to the Archangel Michael, sits on its own bay reachable by boat. Symi also hosts a summer arts festival running from July through September, with live music, theater, and an international film festival that screens movies outdoors in the harbor square for free.

The island's coastline holds coves reachable mainly by boat or on foot, including Agios Georgios Disaronas, a pebble beach backed by a 300 meter cliff, and St Nicholas Beach near the village of Pedi, shaded by tamarisk trees. Hiking trails connect Chorio to villages like Agia Marina along the coast, and Symi's famous shrimp, caught locally each May and June, shows up fried whole on menus across the harbor.

Symi has no airport, so travelers arrive by ferry from Rhodes or Kos, a crossing of roughly one to two hours. It suits travelers who want real architecture, history, and quiet coves without a resort feel, and staying at least a couple of nights lets the island's harbor and hillsides settle back into their own rhythm once the day-trip boats leave.
