Is Syros Worth Visiting?

Syros holds the title of capital of the Cyclades, and its main town looks nothing like the whitewashed postcard image most people carry of the island chain it governs.

Syros's capital, Ermoupoli, was founded by refugees fleeing the Greek War of Independence in the 1820s, and the wealth that followed built a skyline of neoclassical mansions, Venetian-influenced churches, and grand civic buildings unlike anywhere else in the Cyclades. Miaouli Square anchors the town, framed by a Town Hall designed by Ernst Ziller and the Apollo Theatre, modeled in part on La Scala di Milano and still hosting performances during the summer Aegean Festival.

Above Ermoupoli, Ano Syros preserves the island's oldest settlement, dating to the 1200s, its narrow lanes climbing toward the Catholic Cathedral of Saint George. Roughly half the island's population identifies as Catholic, a legacy of centuries under Venetian rule, and Syros marks Easter with a rare joint celebration between its Orthodox and Catholic communities, complete with shared processions through Ermoupoli.

The island's south holds most of its beaches and resort villages, including Kini, Galissas, and Delfini, several with Blue Flag status, while the wilder north, known as Apano Meria, stays barren and mountainous, its coastline reachable mainly by foot or boat. Syros also functions as the ferry hub of the northern Cyclades, with frequent connections to Mykonos, Tinos, Naxos, and Paros, along with a small airport serving flights from Athens.

Syros suits travelers who want real architecture, food, and culture alongside beach time, without the crowds or seasonal shutdown of its more famous neighbors, since Ermoupoli stays lively through winter thanks to its university population. At least a full day for the capital and another for the beaches and Ano Syros gives the island the time it deserves.
