Is Thassos Worth Visiting?
Thassos built its ancient wealth on marble so prized it was shipped across the Mediterranean, and one beach on the island's north coast is covered entirely in that same white stone rather than sand.
Thassos, Greece's northernmost island, sits just 12 kilometers from the mainland near Kavala. Limenas, the capital, holds the ruins of an ancient theater carved into a hillside above the sea, still used for performances in summer, along with the Ancient Agora and an Acropolis reachable by a walk up from the harbor, and the Archaeological Museum traces the island's history back to the 7th century BC.
Marble Beach, also called Saliara, covers its shoreline in white marble pebbles left behind by a former quarry, and the stones reflect sunlight in a way that turns the shallow water an unusually intense blue. Golden Beach runs for over two kilometers of fine sand on the east coast, well suited to families, and Giola, a natural rock pool cut into cliffs on the southern coast, fills with seawater warmed by the sun for swimming and cliff jumping.
Mountain villages like Panagia and Theologos, the island's former capital, keep stone houses and narrow lanes built well back from the coast, a legacy of residents retreating inland during Ottoman rule, and Kastro, higher still, holds the remains of a medieval settlement. Local food draws on the island's pine forests and coastline in equal measure, with pine honey, olive oil, and kavourmas, a preserved pork dish, showing up on menus in both mountain tavernas and seaside restaurants.
Thassos has no airport of its own, so travelers fly into Kavala and take a short ferry from Keramoti, a crossing of well under an hour. It suits families, hikers, and beach travelers in equal measure, and four to five days give the island's coastline, mountain villages, and ruins enough time to come together.
