Is Tilos Expensive?
Tilos runs affordably by Dodecanese standards, and the island's small scale and modest tourist infrastructure keep both accommodation and daily expenses well below what busier islands nearby charge.
Tilos offers real value through family-run guesthouses in Livadia and Megalo Chorio, where rooms with garden views or balconies cost noticeably less than comparable stays on Rhodes or Kos. Ferry crossings from either island run reasonably too, and choosing a slower boat over the faster catamaran brings the cost of the crossing down further for anyone willing to spend a bit more time on the water.
Getting around the island costs little, since renting a bicycle or scooter gives an inexpensive way to explore, and the local bus connects Livadia to Eristos Beach and other stops for a small flat fare. Walking covers plenty of ground too, since marked trails link beaches, hilltop ruins, and the abandoned village of Mikro Horio, all free to explore once you've arrived.
Dining stays reasonable throughout, with family-run tavernas in both main villages serving straightforward Greek food, and self-catering with groceries from local shops brings costs down further for anyone staying more than a few days.
Livadia's main beach and Eristos Beach both give families and budget travelers alike safe, shallow swimming without any entry fee, and much of what makes Tilos worth visiting, its hiking trails, birdwatching, and quiet coastline, costs nothing beyond the effort of getting there on foot.
Tilos also connects easily to Nisyros and Symi by regular ferry, making it a genuinely affordable base for anyone building a wider Dodecanese itinerary around the island rather than treating it as a single stop.
Tilos suits budget-conscious travelers wanting real nature, quiet beaches, and low-key village life without the costs that come with the Dodecanese's busier islands.
