What Is Alexandroupoli Known For?

Alexandroupoli is known first for its lighthouse, built in 1880 by the French Society of Lighthouses and Lanterns to guide ships navigating toward the Bosporus and the wider Mediterranean. Rising 27 meters above sea level with a light visible up to 24 nautical miles out, it remains one of the few still supervised lighthouses left in the Greek network today, and it stands as the naval symbol of a city that only began to develop in the 1850s, when fishermen from nearby coastal villages settled here and gave it its start.

The city carries an equally strong reputation tied to nature, since the Evros Delta, just outside town, ranks among the most significant wetlands in Europe.
