What Is Amorgos Known For?

Amorgos owes much of its international recognition to a single French film from 1988, and the island's landscape still carries that legacy in ways visitors notice the moment they arrive.

Amorgos is known first for The Big Blue, Luc Besson's cult film about competitive free diving, shot partly at Agia Anna beach and around the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa. The film sparked real, lasting interest in free diving as a sport worldwide, and a cafe in the port of Katapola still carries the film's name today, drawing visitors who want to watch it while sitting near where parts of it were made.

The monastery itself gives Amorgos its most recognized landmark independent of the film. Built in 1017 and expanded in 1088 under Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, Panagia Hozoviotissa sits carved directly into a cliff face roughly 300 meters above the sea, reachable by a climb of more than 300 steps. Local legend holds that builders first attempted the site lower down, only to find the walls mysteriously collapsed each morning until they discovered their tools moved to the current, more inaccessible spot, which they took as a sign to build there instead.

Amorgos is also known for the Olympia shipwreck, a cargo ship that sank in February 1980 in Liveros Bay near Kalotaritissa while its crew sought shelter from strong winds. All aboard survived, and the wreck has since become one of the island's most recognized images, reinforced further by its appearance in Besson's film.

Beyond film and monastery, Amorgos holds real archaeological weight too, since Dokathismata-style Cycladic figurines dating to around 2700 BC were unearthed in cemeteries near Agios Pavlos, some now displayed at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, connecting the island's identity to a period long before either the monastery or the movie existed, close enough to Naxos for travelers extending a Cyclades trip.
