What Is Andros Known For?

Andros built genuine wealth on the sea long before tourism arrived, and the mansions still standing in its capital tell that story better than any museum plaque could.

Andros is known first as the island of shipowners and captains, a reputation that reached its peak in the 19th and 20th centuries when families including Embirikos and Goulandris built fleets that carried people and goods across the world. By 1939, Andros ranked second only to Piraeus in ship registrations nationally, and its captains pioneered the Greece to North America shipping route in the early 20th century, a level of prosperity that earned the island the nickname Little England. Walking through Chora today still reveals that history directly, in neoclassical mansions, marble fountains, and the Maritime Museum, founded in 1972 as a donation from the Goulandris family.

Andros is equally known for something unexpected in the otherwise dry Cyclades: real, flowing water. Springs run through villages like Menites and Apikia, where the Sariza spring produces mineral water bottled and sold across Greece, and waterfalls at Pythara and Gerolimni give the island a genuinely different landscape than its neighbors, with rivers and greenery replacing the arid terrain found on islands like Mykonos or Tinos.

That water feeds directly into Andros's other major reputation, since it holds the only fully signposted hiking network in the Cyclades, restored mule paths and stone trails collectively known as the Andros Routes, stretching up to 100 kilometers end to end across the island.

The Unknown Sailor monument in Chora's Riva Square stands as the island's clearest symbol of that maritime legacy, and the Goulandris Foundation's Museum of Modern Art gives Andros a cultural weight uncommon for an island its size, connecting shipping wealth directly to contemporary art patronage.
