What Is Antiparos Known For?

Antiparos holds one of the oldest caves in Europe, a genuine geological feature old enough to have drawn visitors leaving their names on its walls for centuries before modern tourism existed.

Antiparos is known first for the Cave of Antiparos, believed to be around 45 million years old and among the oldest in Greece. Reaching the main chamber requires descending 411 steps into the hillside of Agios Ioannis, where stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years fill the space, and an 18th century church, Agios Ioannis Spiliotis, sits at the entrance. Visitors over the centuries, including some early travelers, have left carved names and dates on the cave walls, adding a layer of human history to the geological one.

The island is also known, more recently, as a favored summer destination for actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, who purchased a property there in 2004, a connection that's drawn additional attention to the island among travelers over the past two decades.

Antiparos's Chora keeps a real character of its own too, built around the ruins of a Venetian castle, with narrow, whitewashed streets and a village pace that stays noticeably quieter than the larger islands nearby. Agios Georgios beach, on the island's southern coast, is known for its volcanic rock formations, which have carved out coves, natural bridges, and small caves that swimmers and divers can pass directly through, and Sifneiko beach draws visitors for its sunsets over the water.

Its position just a short crossing from Paros keeps Antiparos closely tied to its larger neighbor, though the island has held onto a distinct identity of its own, shaped as much by its ancient cave as by anything happening on the surface above it.
