What Is Antipaxos Known For?

Antipaxos carries a mythological claim to its own vineyards, since local legend holds that Dionysus, the god of wine, personally favored the island's fertile soil and abundant sun as the perfect place to plant his first vines.

Antipaxos is known first for that wine tradition, which has continued in practice for centuries regardless of the myth's origins. The island's interior, covered in small, family-run vineyards, produces a rich, dark red wine in limited quantities using largely traditional and organic methods, and since almost none of it gets exported, tasting it means sitting down at one of the island's own beachside tavernas.

Antipaxos is equally known for its turquoise water, a distinctive shade created by white pebbles along the shore giving way to soft white sand just beneath the surface. Voutoumi, Vrika, and the quieter Mesovrika between them all share that same striking color gradient, drawing boats from Paxos and Corfu throughout the summer for swimming and snorkeling.

The island's history carries real weight too, since Antipaxos was originally settled by the Souliotes, a mountain community renowned across Greece for its resistance against Ottoman rule. After their eventual defeat in 1803, the Souliotes left the island for other parts of the country, and Antipaxos has remained lightly inhabited ever since, its population recorded at just 21 residents in the most recent census.

Covering only about 5 square kilometers, with its main settlement centered on the small harbor of Agrapidia, Antipaxos has no natural springs or running water system, so residents and visitors alike rely on rainwater collected in cisterns, a detail that says something about how genuinely small-scale life here has stayed, connecting today by short boat crossing to Paxos and Corfu.
