What Is Arki Known For?

Arki's history ties directly back to one of the most significant monasteries in the Aegean, since the island served as working farmland for Patmos's Monastery of Saint John for nearly a thousand years.

Arki is known first for that monastic connection. When Saint Christodoulos took ownership of Patmos in 1087, Arki became farming and pasture land under the monastery's control, and today's residents are believed to descend from the farmers and shepherds who worked that land, with the monastery still holding a significant portion of the island to this day.

The island is equally known for the ruins of the Castle of Arki, dating back to the 4th century BC, standing beside the Church of Panagia Pantanassa, the oldest church on the island. Archaeological finds scattered around Arki add real depth to that ancient history, including Neolithic pottery discovered at Tiganakia beach and ancient bronze coins found elsewhere on the island, evidence of settlement stretching back thousands of years before the monastery ever claimed the land.

Arki also carries a more recent chapter of history from the Second World War, when residents used a cave on the island as shelter during bombardments, and the ruins of an Italian observation post from that same period still stand on the hill above the harbor.

Beyond its history, Arki and its surrounding islets belong to the Natura 2000 network, recognized for the bird species that use the area, and the island's sheltered harbor has drawn sailors navigating the eastern Aegean for generations, its calm waters making Arki itself a genuine destination for anyone exploring the region by boat, connecting easily to Patmos and Lipsi.
