What Is Astypalaia Known For?

Astypalaia gets its most recognized nickname purely from its shape, and seen from above, the island genuinely does look like a butterfly resting on the Aegean.

Astypalaia is known first for that geography, two landmasses joined by a narrow isthmus that gives the island its distinctive silhouette and its position at the meeting point of the Cyclades and Dodecanese, both architecturally and culturally. Its whitewashed Chora and windmill-lined ridge recall the Cyclades, while its administrative history and older maritime connections place it firmly within the Dodecanese.

The island is equally known for the Querini Castle, built by the Venetian nobleman Giovanni Querini after the Fourth Crusade granted him the island in 1207. The Querini family ruled Astypalaia for close to 300 years, and their name became so tied to the island that the family itself took on the title Querini Stampalia. Built directly on the site of the island's ancient acropolis using dark local stone, the castle reached its final form in the 15th century, and its walls once enclosed nearly the entire population as protection against repeated pirate raids, with outer houses forming a defensive ring locals called xokastra. Two churches, Panagia tou Kastrou and Agios Georgios, still stand within its walls today.

Astypalaia is also known through mythology as the lover of Poseidon, and the ancient city that once stood where Chora sits today minted its own coins featuring a shield and dolphins, evidence of a settled, independent identity stretching back well before Venetian rule arrived.

Astypalaia became the first Dodecanese island occupied by Italy during the 1912 Italo-Turkish War, and like the rest of the island group, it wasn't formally reunited with Greece until 1948, connecting today by ferry through Kos or Amorgos.
