What Is Delphi Known For?

Delphi held a position no other place in the ancient Greek world could claim: the literal center of the earth, according to the myth that gave the site its name.

Delphi is known first for the Oracle, a priestess called the Pythia who served in the Temple of Apollo and was believed to deliver prophecies directly from the god himself. For nearly two thousand years, kings, generals, and ordinary citizens traveled here before making major decisions, whether founding a colony, going to war, or choosing a new leader, and the Oracle's answers, often deliberately ambiguous, carried enough weight to shape the course of entire city-states. Modern researchers have suggested the Pythia's trance-like state may have come from gases rising through a fissure beneath the temple floor, though the ancients understood it simply as divine communication.

The site is equally known as the omphalos, or navel of the world, tied to a myth in which Zeus released two eagles from opposite ends of the earth to find its exact center. According to the story, they met above Delphi, and a carved stone called the omphalos was placed there to mark the spot, later kept inside the Temple of Apollo itself.

Delphi is also known for the Pythian Games, held here as the second most important athletic competition in ancient Greece after the Olympics, and the sanctuary's broader religious authority made it a genuine center of unity across the Greek world during the 6th century BC specifically.

Set between two towering cliffs on Mount Parnassus, roughly 180 kilometers northwest of Athens, Delphi's archaeological site remains a UNESCO World Heritage listing today, preserving ruins that once drew pilgrims from across the entire ancient Mediterranean.
