What Is Donoussa Known For?
Donousa carries a name tangled up in Greek mythology, and even scholars don't fully agree on which version of the story actually explains it.
Donousa is known first for its connection to the god Dionysus. According to legend, the island was once called Dia, and it was here that Theseus and Ariadne stopped on their return voyage from Crete after Ariadne helped Theseus escape the Minotaur's labyrinth. Dionysus, seeing Ariadne, fell for her and ordered Theseus to leave her behind on the island, a myth that some believe eventually gave the island its modern name. Other theories trace Donousa's name to the Greek verb meaning to moor, tied to its historical role as a safe stopover for ships navigating the Aegean, while still others connect it to a word associated with earthquakes or the rough waves that batter its coastline.
The island's remote position also made it a practical hideout for pirates for centuries, and that same isolation shaped its economy into one built almost entirely around farming and fishing well into the 20th century, with tourism only a recent addition to island life.
Donousa is equally known today for its network of walking trails, old goat paths that connect the main village of Stavros to smaller settlements including Messaria, Mersini, and Kalotaritissa, along with remote beaches and a hike up Mount Papas, the island's highest point at 385 meters, giving hikers wide views over the surrounding Aegean.
With fewer than 200 permanent residents spread across those four small settlements, Donousa has kept a genuinely small-scale character, connecting by ferry through Naxos or Amorgos rather than any direct route from the mainland.
