What Is Drama Known For?

Drama takes its name from an old word for water, and once you see the springs running straight through the center of the city, that origin makes immediate sense.

Drama is known first for the Agia Varvara springs, where natural water bubbles up into canals and ponds that wind through a central city park lined with ancient trees. The name Drama itself traces back to Hydrama or Dyrama, a reflection of just how much the region's identity has always been tied to water.

The city carries an equally strong reputation for wine, since the surrounding region has been associated with viticulture since antiquity, when the Hedones, a local Thracian tribe, worshipped Dionysus and cultivated vineyards on the slopes of Mount Falakro. That tradition slowed through the Byzantine period but returned in force starting in the 1990s, when a new generation of winemakers began producing internationally recognized wines under the Drama Protected Geographical Origin designation, and wineries including Domaine Costa Lazaridi now draw visitors from across the country each spring for the Dramaoinognosia wine festival.

Drama is also known for its tobacco warehouse architecture, a physical reminder of the industry that once shaped much of Eastern Macedonia's economy, and several of these buildings, including the Spierer Tobacco Warehouse, have since been converted into hotels and restaurants that keep that history visible rather than abandoned.

Outside the city, the Aggitis Cave, stretching more than 13 kilometers, ranks as the only navigable river cave in Greece, and the Falakro Ski Center gives the region a genuine winter season with 21 pistes across varying difficulty levels. Each September, the Drama International Short Film Festival adds a cultural dimension to a city already known for its food, wine, and springs, drawing filmmakers from around the world to a region not far from Kavala.
