What Is Elafonisos Known For?

Elafonisos holds the oldest known submerged city anywhere in the world, sitting just a few meters beneath the water separating the island from the Peloponnese coast.

Elafonisos is known first for Pavlopetri, a Bronze Age settlement dating back roughly 5,000 years and thought to have sunk around 1000 BC following seismic activity in the region. Archaeologists rediscovered the site in 1967, and the remains, including house foundations, streets, tombs, and storage rooms, still sit visible today in just three to four meters of water. Diving and close boat access remain restricted to protect the ruins from looting, though snorkelers can swim directly above the site and make out fragments of the ancient layout below.

The island is equally known for the geography that shapes its most famous beaches. Simos, split into two connected bays by a narrow strip of land, stays swimmable regardless of wind direction, since one side or the other always sits sheltered. The dunes between them, protected under the Natura 2000 network, support rare sea cedars and sea daffodils growing directly out of the sand, an unusual ecosystem for a Greek island this size.

Elafonisos hasn't always been separated from the mainland either. A major earthquake around 375 AD split the island from the Peloponnese and destroyed part of Pavlopetri in the process, and before that, the narrow strait running between them served for centuries as one of the shortest sea routes connecting eastern and western Greece, a passage historically used even by Arab naval expeditions sailing toward Constantinople in the 7th century.

Elafonisos connects today by a short ferry crossing from Pounda on the mainland, with Kythira also reachable nearby for anyone extending the trip further into the region's layered ancient history.
