What Is Halki Known For?

Halki takes its name from the ancient Greek word for copper, and that mining history predates by centuries the industry the island would later become far more famous for.

Halki is known first for sponge diving, an industry that brought real wealth to the island through the 19th century and shaped the neoclassical harbor houses still standing in Emborio today. When demand for natural sponges collapsed in the early 20th century following the rise of artificial alternatives, roughly 500 Halkiot divers left in 1904 alone, most settling in Tarpon Springs, Florida, where sponge diving continued to thrive. That emigration ran deep enough that Tarpon Springs now holds the highest proportion of Greek-American residents of any town in the United States, and returning Halkiot families later funded a road through the village named Tarpon Springs Boulevard, a direct physical link between the two communities.

Halki is also known internationally for its UNESCO designation in 1983 as the Island of Peace and Friendship, recognition tied to the island's role hosting youth conferences and international gatherings focused on cooperation, a title that still shapes how Halki markets and sees itself today.

The Monastery of Agios Ioannis Alargas, on the island's western side, connects directly back to that sponge diving legacy, since Saint John is considered the patron saint of sponge divers, and the monastery's biggest feast, held each August 28th and 29th, draws pilgrims from across the region in his honor.

Halki's population dropped from around 3,000 residents to just a few hundred over the course of the 20th century as sponge diving declined, a shift that reshaped the island's economy toward tourism, connecting today by ferry to Rhodes and Tilos.
