What Is Kalamata Known For?

Kalamata's name reaches supermarket shelves worldwide long before most people ever set foot in the city itself, and that olive is really just the entry point into a place with a lot more going on.

Kalamata is known first and most widely for its olives, the deep purple, almond-shaped variety grown in the fertile Messinian plains surrounding the city and protected under EU designation of origin, meaning only olives actually cultivated here can legally carry the name. A single ancient tree at the Institute of Olive and Vegetable Crops, estimated at somewhere between 800 and 1,700 years old, is believed to be the source from which generations of cuttings established the groves that supply much of the world's Kalamata olive production today.

The city is known for far more than that single product, though. Messinia's fertile soil also produces figs, citrus, and thyme honey, and the central market, running since the 1950s, gives visitors a direct look at that produce alongside olive oil, sesame bars, and traditional sweets sold by vendors who've worked the same stalls for decades.

History runs just as deep here. The old town's Byzantine Church of the Apostles marks the site where the first mass on liberated Greek soil took place on March 23, 1821, following an uprising against Ottoman rule, and the square outside still carries that date in its name. The Castle of Kalamata, known locally as Kastro, overlooks the city from its hilltop, and the Folklore and History Museum traces the region's story through textiles, pottery, and early printing equipment.

Kalamata is also known for its International Dance Festival, held each summer and drawing companies from around the world, along with beaches known for their clarity, giving the city a reputation that stretches well beyond what's sitting in a jar of olives.
