What Is Karpathos Known For?

Karpathos holds a mountain village where daily life has kept traditions that vanished from most of Greece generations ago, and the isolation that preserved them was originally a matter of survival rather than choice.

Karpathos is known first for Olympos, a village built high on a northern ridge specifically to stay out of reach of pirate raids. That isolation lasted for centuries, since the village had no road connecting it to the rest of the island until 2011, relying instead on boats through the port of Diafani or mule paths across the mountains. Women in Olympos still wear traditional dress daily rather than only for festivals, a costume called kawai that includes embroidered aprons, headscarves, and handmade boots known as stavra, and property in the village traditionally passes down through the female line, giving grandmothers real authority within many households.

The village is equally known for preserving a dialect tracing back to ancient Doric Greek, layered over the centuries with Byzantine, Italian, and Turkish influence depending on who controlled the island at different points. Linguists travel specifically to study it, and older women in particular keep the dialect alive through lullabies, prayers, and everyday conversation, a version of Greek distinct enough that even other Karpathians notice the difference immediately.

Karpathos also carries mythology tied directly to its name, since the island was believed in legend to be favored by Poseidon and by Proteus, the shape-shifting sea god, and Olympos itself takes its name from the mountain it sits on, echoing Mount Olympus far to the north. Seventy-five windmills once dotted the village, and traditional music played on the lyra and laouto still accompanies festivals held throughout the summer, connecting the island's living culture to Rhodes and Crete across the wider southern Aegean.
