What Is Kasos Known For?

Kasos built genuine maritime power out of a barren, rocky landscape, and its ships once numbered in the hundreds during a golden age that shaped both the island's wealth and its role in Greek history.

Kasos is known first for that maritime tradition, since by the early 19th century the island's merchant fleet had grown to roughly 700 trading vessels, later converted into warships to support the Greek War of Independence. Kasos declared its own revolution on May 1, 1821, becoming the first Dodecanese island to do so, and its fleet played a decisive role supplying and supporting revolutionaries in Crete, including handing over fully equipped ships like the Themistoklis, which became Admiral Miaoulis's flagship. That support came at a real cost: in 1824, Ottoman-Egyptian forces destroyed the island in retaliation, an event that devastated the population and left Kasos rebuilding for years afterward.

The island is equally known for the wave of emigration that followed decades later, when many Kasiots left for Egypt in 1859 and again in 1866 to work on the construction of the Suez Canal, part of a broader pattern of emigration that later extended to the United States and South Africa as shipping declined with the rise of steam power.

Kasos also holds a place in ancient literary history, since Homer's Iliad lists the island among those that sent ships to fight in the Trojan War, giving Kasos a documented connection to Greek epic tradition stretching back roughly three thousand years.

The captains' mansions still standing in Fry, the island's capital, reflect the wealth generated during that earlier maritime peak, giving the town's architecture a direct, physical link to the fleet that once made Kasos one of the more significant naval powers in the southern Aegean, connecting today by ferry to Karpathos and Crete.
