What Is Katerini Known For?

Katerini sits close enough to Mount Olympus that the mountain of the gods dominates the skyline from nearly anywhere in the city, and that proximity shapes much of what the region is known for.

Katerini is known first for its position at the foothills of Greece's highest mountain, and nearby Ancient Dion reflects just how seriously that connection was once taken. Dedicated to Zeus and considered the sacred city of the ancient Macedonians, Dion served as a religious and ceremonial center where kings including Philip II and Alexander the Great made offerings before setting out on military campaigns, and its archaeological site remains one of the most significant in northern Greece today.

The surrounding region of Pieria is known for its agriculture, with fertile plains producing peaches, olives, kiwis, cherries, and a long-established dried nut industry that's given Katerini a specific culinary reputation of its own. That agricultural identity blends with a food culture shaped by refugees from Asia Minor and Pontus who settled here after the 1923 population exchange, bringing recipes, music, and traditions that still influence local cooking today, and the city's name itself is believed to trace back to a church, Agia Aikaterini, built by refugees who arrived even earlier, in the 18th century.

Katerini is also known for its coastline, since the Pieria region holds over 70 kilometers of sandy beach stretching from Nei Pori down the Thermaic Gulf, giving the area a real dual identity between mountain and sea. Winter sports round that out further, with the ski center at Elatochori giving the region a genuine second season once the beaches close for the year.

Its position between Mount Olympus and Thessaloniki has also made Katerini an increasingly active center for tourism and urban growth in Central Macedonia in recent years.
