What Is Koufonisia Known For?

Koufonisia's name comes from the very feature that defines its coastline, natural hollows carved into the rock by the sea, which locals long ago used to describe the two small islands making up the group.

Koufonisia is known first as part of the Small Cyclades, a cluster of tiny islands sitting between Naxos and Amorgos that also includes Iraklia, Schinoussa, and Donousa. The Koufonisia group itself splits into two islands, Pano (or Ano) Koufonisi, the only inhabited one, and Kato Koufonisi, reachable by a short boat ride and largely left to its own beaches and a single seasonal taverna.

The group is equally known for its connection to Keros, an uninhabited island close by that once served as a major sanctuary for the Cycladic civilization thousands of years ago. Archaeologists excavating the site recovered marble figurines of real historical significance, including the Piper and the Harpist, two of the most recognized symbols of Cycladic art, both now housed at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens rather than on the islands where they were found.

Koufonisia is also known for its scale, since Pano Koufonisi covers only about 3.5 square kilometers and stays entirely car-free, with a single village holding whitewashed houses, seafood restaurants, and bars, and getting anywhere on the island means walking or cycling rather than driving. That small footprint hasn't stopped the group from drawing real recognition, since Lonely Planet has named the Small Cyclades among its top places to visit in Europe.

Connecting through Naxos or Amorgos, Koufonisia gives travelers a genuine look at Cycladic island life on a scale most larger islands left behind decades ago.
