What Is Kythnos Known For?

Kythnos carries a second name tied entirely to what flows beneath it, since the island holds the only thermal springs anywhere in the Cyclades.

Kythnos is known first as Thermia, a name derived from the Greek word for hot springs, centered on the village of Loutra on the island's northeastern coast. Two springs feed the site: Agioi Anargyroi, a saline spring reaching around 36 to 38 degrees Celsius and traditionally used for arthritis and rheumatism, and Kakavos, a hotter, iron-rich spring reaching roughly 52 degrees that mixes with seawater at a free outdoor rock pool anyone can use without a ticket or attendant. Archaeological evidence suggests the springs saw use as early as Roman and Byzantine times, though formal development didn't begin until the 1830s, when Bavarian doctors traveling with King Otto and Queen Amalia identified their therapeutic properties and eventually built a neoclassical bathhouse, designed by the same architect responsible for several of Athens's landmark buildings, that operated for decades afterward.

The island is also known historically for its connection to the Dryopes, an ancient tribe said to have settled Kythnos under a king named, fittingly, Kythnos, giving the island its name well before the thermal springs earned it a second one.

Beyond its history, Kythnos holds one of the oldest wind farms in Greece, five turbines standing on a ridge northwest of Chora, an early example of the renewable energy projects that have since spread across other Aegean islands.

Kythnos connects easily to Serifos and Kea by ferry, giving travelers interested in its springs an easy way to pair the island with a longer western Cyclades trip.
