What Is Larissa Known For?

Larissa's reputation runs deeper than most visitors expect, and its history reaches back far enough that ancient coins from the city still tell part of the story.

Larissa is known first for its connection to Hippocrates, the physician still regarded as the father of medicine, who spent his final years in the city and is believed to have died here around 377 BC. A monument near Alkazar Park marks that legacy today, and his tomb is thought to have been discovered within the city's ancient bounds in 1826.

The city carries an equally old reputation for horses. Sitting at the center of the Thessalian Plain, ancient Larissa minted its own coins featuring a horse on one side, a nod to the region's famous cavalry, considered among the finest fighting forces in the ancient Greek world, and a horse still appears in the city's modern emblem as a symbol of the agricultural work that shaped the plain for centuries.

Larissa also holds a rare distinction: alongside Athens, it's the only Greek city with two surviving ancient theaters, one dating to the 3rd century BC and the other built later under Roman rule. Both sit close to the modern center, giving the city's pedestrianized streets a genuine sense of layered history.

More recently, Larissa has earned a reputation as Greece's city of coffee, with well over a thousand cafeterias packed into its streets and squares, a detail locals bring up with real pride. The surrounding Thessalian Plain, the country's largest agricultural region, also makes Larissa known for its produce, feta, tsipouro, and seasonal fruit featured heavily in food festivals held throughout the year.
