What Is Milos Known For?

Milos gave the world one of its most recognized ancient sculptures, and the island's own volcanic landscape turns out to be just as remarkable as the statue that made it famous.

Milos is known first for the Venus de Milo, the marble statue of Aphrodite discovered in 1820 by a local farmer digging near the village of Tripiti. French authorities acquired it shortly after, and it has remained in the Louvre ever since, though a replica sits in the island's own Archaeological Museum in Plaka, and the site where it was found, near a well preserved Roman amphitheater overlooking the sea, still draws visitors today.

The island's volcanic origin, shaped by roughly five million years of geological activity, gives Milos a landscape unlike anywhere else in the Cyclades, with rock formations colored red, gold, black, and white depending on the mineral content of the soil beneath them. Sarakiniko, a stretch of white volcanic rock carved into smooth, curving shapes, has become the island's most photographed spot precisely because it looks closer to a lunar surface than a typical Greek beach.

That volcanic terrain also explains why Milos holds more beaches than any other Cyclades island, with more than 70 counted across its coastline, ranging from easily accessible stretches near the ports to remote coves reachable only by boat, including Kleftiko's sea caves.

Beyond the coast, Milos is known for the Catacombs, among the most significant early Christian burial sites in Greece and dating to the 1st century AD, and for the mining history tied to its mineral-rich soil, which shaped the island's economy long before tourism did. Its position between Kimolos, Sifnos, and Folegandros also makes it a natural stop for island-hopping through the western Cyclades.
