What Is Patmos Known For?

Patmos holds a designation few places anywhere carry, since the Greek Parliament formally recognized it as a Holy Island in 1981, a status tied directly to events tradition places here nearly two thousand years earlier.

Patmos is known first for the Cave of the Apocalypse, where Christian tradition holds that the Apostle John received the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation, the final book of the New Testament. According to that tradition, John was exiled to Patmos by the Roman emperor Domitian around 95 AD, and while praying inside the cave, he experienced the visions he later dictated to his disciple Prochoros. A natural split in the cave's rock ceiling, dividing into three sections, is traditionally understood by pilgrims as a symbol of the Holy Trinity, and the cave, along with the nearby monastery, was jointly recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1999.

The island is equally known for the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, built in 1088 after the Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos granted the island to the monk Christodoulos Latrinos. Sitting at the highest point on Patmos and visible from nearly everywhere on the island, the monastery holds 99 cells and ten chapels, along with a library containing roughly 890 handwritten codices and 13,000 documents tracing the site's history across nearly a thousand years.

That combination of biblical history and preserved religious architecture has earned Patmos international nicknames including the Jerusalem of the Aegean and the Island of the Apocalypse, and the island continues to draw pilgrims from around the world specifically for its connection to one of Christianity's most significant texts, connecting today by ferry to Leros and Kos.
