What Is Patras Known For?

Patras turns into a different city entirely each winter, when one of Europe's largest carnivals takes over its streets for weeks at a time, and that celebration alone has shaped much of the city's identity.

Patras is known first for its Carnival, running annually since the 1960s and ranking as the largest in Greece, second in Europe only to the carnivals of Venice and Nice. The celebration spans weeks of costumed parades, satirical floats, and balls, building toward a final weekend that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors and closes with the traditional burning of the Carnival King on the harbor, complete with fireworks over the water.

The city is equally known for the Cathedral of Saint Andrew, the largest Orthodox church in Greece and among the largest in the Balkans, built on the site where tradition holds the apostle was crucified around 60 AD. The cathedral houses relics believed to be Andrew's skull and a fragment of the cross he died on, both returned to Patras in 1964 after centuries in Rome, and each November 30th, tens of thousands of pilgrims arrive for the feast honoring the city's patron saint.

Patras is also known as a genuine university city, home to one of Greece's largest student populations, and that presence keeps the city's bars, music, and food scene running with an energy that outsiders don't always expect walking in. The city served as European Capital of Culture in 2006, recognition tied to its performing arts and literary scene that continues through festivals held nearly every season.

Its harbor, connecting Greece directly to Italy, gives Patras a genuinely international character too, one shaped by centuries of ships, pilgrims, and travelers passing through its port on their way to somewhere else, and by an equal number who came specifically for the city itself.
