What Is Porto Heli Known For?
Porto Heli's modern name still carries a trace of what the bay was called more than two thousand years ago, when it supported a working community of fishermen rather than the marina it's known for today.
Porto Heli is known first for its connection to ancient Halieis, a settlement founded around 479 BC by refugees from Tiryns after their city was destroyed by Argos following the Persian Wars. The name Halieis itself means fishermen, and the modern town's name is generally believed to trace back to that same root, sometimes translated as Bay of Eels for the fishing industry that shaped the local economy for centuries afterward. American archaeologists rediscovered the site between 1962 and the 1980s, and remains of the ancient acropolis are still visible on land, while the settlement's communal baths sit just beneath the surface of the bay, occasionally visible when the water is calm.
Porto Heli is equally known today as one of the country's established yachting destinations, its large, sheltered natural harbor drawing sailing and charter traffic from across the Saronic Gulf. That reputation developed largely from the 1960s and 70s onward, when wealthy Athenians and international visitors began building summer homes along the bay, transforming what had been a modest fishing village into a well established resort town.
The surrounding coastline is known for its beaches too, including Hinitsa, Ververonda, and Costa, most offering calm, protected water suited to swimming and water sports alike. Local food carries real weight here as well, with olive oil, honey, cheese, and wine sourced directly from the surrounding region rather than shipped in, giving restaurants around the harbor a genuine connection to the land behind them, all within easy reach of neighboring Spetses across the water.
