What Is Schinoussa Known For?
Schinousa carries a name whose exact origin nobody has fully settled, and that small mystery fits an island whose history stretches back much further than its quiet reputation might suggest.
Schinousa is known first for the debate around its own name, generally traced either to the ancient name Echinousa or to a Venetian nobleman called Schinoza, with a separate local tradition tying it instead to schinos, a bushy plant that grows across the island. Archaeological finds, including pottery and small statues dating back to the 10th century BC, confirm settlement here since antiquity, and the island later flourished as a trading center during the Byzantine period before Venetian rule brought it to its historical peak between the 13th and 16th centuries.
Schinousa is also known for its role as a pirate refuge during Ottoman rule, when raiders used its coves for shelter until the Greek Navy pushed them out in the 19th century, prompting families from neighboring Amorgos to resettle the island afterward. Mersini, the island's natural port, ranks among the more sheltered small-boat harbors anywhere in the Cyclades, a reputation that continues to draw sailing and yachting traffic today.
Farming and fishing have shaped daily life on Schinousa for generations, and its comparatively fertile soil, unusual for the Small Cyclades, supports wine production and cattle raising alongside fishing, giving the island a working agricultural identity that predates its more recent tourism.
As part of the Small Cyclades group alongside Naxos and neighboring islands, Schinousa connects most easily by ferry through Amorgos for anyone building a longer regional trip.
