What Is Serifos Known For?

Serifos ties directly into one of Greek mythology's most famous hero stories, and the legend even explains, according to tradition, why the island's landscape looks the way it does.

Serifos is known first for its connection to Perseus, who according to myth washed ashore here as an infant alongside his mother Danae after her own father set them adrift at sea, fearing a prophecy that his grandson would one day kill him. Raised by the fisherman Dictys, Perseus grew up on the island until King Polydectes, wanting Danae for himself, sent the young hero off to retrieve the head of Medusa, a task meant to be fatal. Perseus succeeded and returned to Serifos, using Medusa's petrifying gaze to turn Polydectes and his followers to stone, and local tradition credits this exact myth with explaining the island's notably rocky terrain.

Serifos is equally known for its mining history, since iron and copper have been extracted from its hills since antiquity, and tradition holds that swords carried by Alexander the Great and his army were forged from Serifos metal. Mining activity continued in waves through Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman periods before the Hellenic Mining Company reopened operations in 1869, and the island's miners went on to play a significant role in Greek labor history when their 1916 strike helped secure improved working conditions still remembered today.
