What Is Tilos Known For?
Tilos was once home to the last elephants living anywhere in Europe, tiny animals barely taller than a person, and their fossilized remains still fill a cave in the center of the island.
Tilos is known first for the dwarf elephants discovered at Charkadio Cave, a site excavated in 1971 by geologist Nikolaos Simeonides that has since yielded more than 15,000 fossilized bones from over 40 individual animals. Standing only about 120 to 150 centimeters tall, these elephants belonged to a species now classified as Palaeoloxodon tiliensis, and researchers believe they became isolated on Tilos when it separated from the surrounding mainland, developing their unusually small size through millennia of island evolution. They survived here for roughly 50,000 years before disappearing around 3,700 to 4,000 years ago, making them the most recent population of elephants recorded anywhere in Europe.
The island is equally known today for its renewable energy project, recognized as the first autonomous green island in the Mediterranean. Tilos previously relied on an unreliable underwater cable running from Kos through Nisyros, a system prone to blackouts that damaged appliances and forced businesses onto diesel generators. A wind turbine and solar park now supply the island through high-tech battery storage, a project the European Commission has held up as a model for other small, poorly connected islands across the EU.
Tilos is also known for its status as a protected nature reserve, popular among birdwatchers and hikers, and for Mikro Chorio, an abandoned village left behind when residents relocated in the 1960s, its stone ruins now home to a single bar that still draws visitors after dark, connecting Tilos by ferry to Rhodes and Kos.
