What Is Tinos Known For?

Tinos holds the most significant Orthodox pilgrimage site in Greece, and the discovery of the icon at its center is tied directly to the birth of the modern Greek state itself.

Tinos is known first for the Church of Panagia Evangelistria, built after a nun named Pelagia experienced a series of visions in which the Virgin Mary revealed the location of a buried icon somewhere on the island. Excavation began in September 1822, and after months of digging, the icon surfaced in January 1823, roughly a year into the Greek War of Independence, and many at the time interpreted its discovery as a divine sign favoring the revolution. The church, completed by 1830, now holds the icon as the declared national patron of Greece, and every year thousands of pilgrims arrive to climb the hill from the port to the church, some making the ascent on their hands and knees along a dedicated path.

The island carries an additional, more somber connection to Greek history through the church's most important feast day. On August 15, 1940, an Italian submarine torpedoed the Greek cruiser Elli while it sat anchored in Tinos harbor during the Feast of the Dormition, an unprovoked attack that predated Greece's formal entry into the Second World War and left the ship's sailors regarded as the country's first casualties of the conflict. A small mausoleum near the Zoodochos Pigi church now holds an ossuary for the crew alongside a recovered fragment of the torpedo itself.

Tinos is also known more broadly as one of Greece's most devoutly religious islands, holding hundreds of smaller chapels and monasteries beyond its central church, connecting easily to Mykonos and Syros for anyone extending a Cyclades trip.
