What Is Tripoli Known For?

Tripoli holds one of the defining turning points of the Greek War of Independence, and the city's central square still centers on the man most responsible for it.

Tripoli is known first for the Siege of Tripolitsa in 1821, a decisive campaign in the revolution led by Theodoros Kolokotronis, remembered as the Old Man of the Morias. The city, then the Ottoman administrative center of the Peloponnese, was destroyed three separate times across its history, first during the 1770 Orlov Revolt, then during the 1821 siege itself, and again in 1828 when it burned for nine straight days. That legacy is honored today in Areos Square, where an eight to nine meter bronze equestrian statue of Kolokotronis, completed in 1971, stands as the city's central landmark.

Tripoli is equally known as an important center of the Filiki Eteria, the secret society that helped organize the uprising against Ottoman rule, and the War Museum, a branch of the National War Museum in Athens, holds artifacts tracing that revolutionary period in real detail. The Archaeological Museum, housed in a neoclassical building designed by Ernesto Ziller in 1896, adds a longer historical view, with collections spanning the Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods.

Beyond its history, Tripoli is known for its position at 655 meters of altitude, surrounded by the mountains of Artemisio, Parthenio, and Mainalo, giving the city a genuinely different climate and landscape than the coastal towns most visitors associate with the Peloponnese. That elevation also puts Tripoli close to the Mantineia wine region, known for its Moschofilero variety, and within reach of hiking and winter sports on Mount Mainalo, rounding out a city with its own distinct mountain identity alongside Nafplio and Kalamata elsewhere in the Peloponnese.
